Why Choose Psychological Testing with Winston Psychiatry?
They Are Like Medical Tests
Psychological testing is similar to medical tests, such as X-rays or blood tests. Just as your primary care physician uses those tests to create an effective treatment plan, psychologists use psychological testing to diagnose and treat a wide range of mental health concerns.
While clinical interviews and personal histories often provide sufficient information for diagnosis and treatment planning, psychological testing offers in-depth insights that may not be immediately apparent. It helps confirm diagnoses, develop treatment plans, and track responses to treatment.
Who May Benefit from Psychological Testing?
Psychological testing can benefit individuals in a variety of situations, including:
✅ When the underlying cause of a problem isn’t clear. Psychological testing helps identify challenges when patients or providers feel stuck or uncertain about the best path forward.
✅ When there are difficulties in personal relationships or work settings. Testing can help determine whether issues like anger management, interpersonal skills, or specific personality traits are contributing to the problem.
✅ When emotional disorders are suspected. Testing can assess whether conditions such as anxiety or depression are present.
Common Reasons for Psychological Testing
✅ Concerns about intellectual abilities (e.g., poor academic performance, problem-solving challenges, school readiness)
✅ Suspected learning disabilities (e.g., language, visual/auditory processing, or motor skill delays)
✅ Attention deficit disorder (e.g., inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity)
✅ Emotional functioning concerns (e.g., self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, trauma, anxiety, depression)
For children struggling in school, psychological testing can identify specific disabilities and help secure accommodations. Testing reports are invaluable tools for working with schools and other professionals to implement effective interventions.
At Winston Psychiatry, we ensure our testing program is tailored to meet each client’s individual needs, helping to create effective treatment and support plans.
The Psychological Testing Process
What to Expect
The testing process typically requires 4-12 hours to complete, depending on the diagnosis and history. Not all this time involves direct interaction with the patient; it also includes test administration, scoring, interpretation, report writing, and feedback.
While we strive to complete the process as quickly as possible, a comprehensive evaluation may take 3-6 weeks. The more available you are, the faster we can finalize the process.
Steps of the Testing Process
Step 1: Initial Interview
We begin with an interview to understand your concerns and determine if testing would be beneficial. This appointment lasts 50-90 minutes and requires a copay or payment at the time of service.
Step 2: Insurance Authorization
If applicable, we request authorization from your insurance provider. This process may take a few days, and our staff will handle the submission following the initial interview.
Step 3: Testing Sessions
The testing phase typically takes 3-6 hours and may require multiple appointments. Testing involves various psychological assessments tailored to address your concerns. It may also include interviews with significant others (e.g., parents, spouses, teachers) and a review of relevant documents or records.
Scheduling depends on clinician and client availability. Payment or copay for testing is due at the time of the session.
Step 4: Report and Feedback Session
After testing, we schedule a 50-minute feedback session, usually 1-2 weeks later. During this session, we review findings, diagnoses, and recommendations. You will also receive a detailed report, which can be shared with medical professionals, schools, or other agencies as needed.
At Winston Psychiatry in Dunwoody, Georgia, we are committed to providing thorough, compassionate psychological evaluations to help you or your loved ones achieve greater mental health and well-being.
